The South American Flamingos project is dedicated to investigating the biology of these birds, including their genetics, physiology and behavior, and to analyzing how anthropogenic factors, such as climate change, lithium mining and industrial agriculture, affect their populations and habitats. By monitoring population trends using historical census and citizen science data, as well as tracking movements using satellite GPS transmitters, we seek to understand habitat use and flamingo responses to environmental threats. We also conduct genetic analyses to define conservation units and ensure the genetic diversity of the species. In addition, we study exposure to contaminants, such as heavy metals and microplastics, and analyze the immune response and health status of flamingos in relation to these factors. With these studies, we aim to develop comprehensive conservation strategies that ensure the long-term protection and survival of these emblematic species.
